Electronic ID
In order to use digital services from Norwegian public agencies, you must have an electronic identification, e-ID, to be able to log in. An electronic identification is an electronic way of proving one's identity on the internet.
Get an electronic ID
You can choose between five different electronic IDs to log into digital services from Norwegian public authorities: MinID, BankID, BankID on mobile, Buypass or Commfides.
MinID
MinID is a personal, electronic ID that gives you access to public services with a medium security clearance, level 3.
Norwegian Digitalisation Agency is responsible for MinID. If you are 13 years old or older, you can order a MinID.
To register yourself as a MinID user you need the following:
- National identity number or D number
- Mobile phone or e-mail address
- PIN code letter
If you want to open a digital mailbox account, however, you need security clearance higher than that which MinID provides.
BankID
BankID is a personal, electronic ID that gives you access to public services with the highest security clearance, level 4.
You can get a BankID from your bank, if you are 15 years old or older. However, some banks operate with their own age limits.
To order BankID you must contact your bank.

Buypass ID
Buypass ID is a personal, electronic ID that gives you access to public services with the highest security clearance, level 4.
Buypass is issued by Buypass AS, and you can use Buypass ID on smartcard or Buypass ID in mobil. Anyone with a Buypass smart card, can use Buypass ID in mobile.
Buypass ID has no age limit, but requires legitimation and personal signature when issued.

Commfides
Commfides is a personal, electronic ID which gives you access to public services with the highest security clearance, level 4.
Commfides Norge AS delivers Commifides eID as an electronic ID on a secure USB stick. Commfides ID has no age limit, but requires legitimation and personal signature when issued.
To order Commfides e-ID you must contact Commfides directly.
BankID on mobile
BankID on mobile is a personal, electronic ID that gives you access to public services with the highest security clearance, level 4.
BankID on mobile is issued by your bank.
In order to user BankID on mobile you need to have the usual BankID with codes from your bank. You can only activate BankID on mobile via the bank that gave you BankID.
To activate BankID on mobile you need to log in to your internet bank.
Create a user profile in ID-porten log-in system
You can create a user profile in ID-porten log-in system by using your chosen electronic ID.
It is equally important to register your mobile phone number and e-mail address in ID-porten as it is to register your residential address in the National Population Register.
Check and update your contact information.
Finding digital services
To use relevant digital services from Norwegian public agencies, you must first find them. You will find most digital services on the web sites of the public agencies responsible for providing them. You can also find digital public services via the portal Norge.no, which has a search function, a topic menu and life situations to help you find relevant services.
Security and privacy
Electronic ID is important to confirm that you are the person you claim to be when using online public services.
To prevent identity theft, it is important to be aware of to whom you are giving your personal information, and the context in which the information is being provided.
